I have a collection of rocks, driftwood and rusted metal found at the beach and desert. When I begin a new
piece I normally start first to construct with natural objects.
The idea of using twigs came from driving the freeway in the winter time. I noticed a lot of brush showing
patterns of very fine twigs. I began to think that I could cut them top, bottom and side to form a cube, so using dried brush from my yard I made a cube shape. Then I made the same size cube with blue acrylic lighting the
inside with blue neon. My thought was to represent tree and water.
Los Angeles has many Australian eucalyptus. A friend has a very old tree with beautiful long leaves. I collected
a bunch of these leaves and began putting them together with glue. I was trying to see how tall a shape I could
construct this way. It came to look like a cone shaped ear of corn. I made the same shape with red fabric and
red neon inside placing this on top of the eucalyptus leaf cone.
I found a large black stone at the beach which had broken into three pieces. I cast one of the piece with red resin
fitting red neon inside then putting the real stone and resin piece together like the original stone.
I picked up a dry leaf from a tree in my yard. So using this leaf shape enlarged I made a constructed with wire
and fabric but had technical problems and I began losing interest. Time passed then a close friend developed
cancer and the Iraq war started. I looked again at the leaf piece and wanted to finish it. This piece is about a
leaf falling from the tree. Over time this process of making a piece made me feel a little better. After two years
my friend died and the war is still on.
